pomes of buddy don: Though Small as Sand

Though Small as Sand

The universe is vast and still expands
Or seems to from our earth bound vantage points –
To breadth that no one truly understands
Whose implication largely disappoints.

For what in such a universe are we
But scattered sands upon a grain of sand?
Religious principles must disagree
In claiming God’s likeness was made in man.

For if God is not everything and all
That ever was or ever yet could be
Then must God be, like mankind, rather small
Compared to galaxy and galaxy?

No, God is all and everything, and man
Is still a part of God though small as sand.

pomes of buddy don: Brigid

anne over at the gods are bored give me a challenge tuther day, witch twuz to rite a pome in honor of this day (or yesterdy in sum places) known in the celtic wheel of the year as imbolc. tiz the celebrayshun of brigid, witch ye kin google her ifn ye wonta know more. i will let this here lil pome speak fer my poor understandin of such mystries.

Brigid

Upon a day that legends say hog shadows can fortell
The ending of the hoary winter season,
A child was born one early morn between heaven and hell,
Between the warmth of spirit and cold reason.

The year was old, the winter cold, yet tiny shoots of grass
Still bravely pierced the hardened frosty rime –
Their shoots unbowed they stood the vow that like the newborn lass
The spring would quickly grow and reach her prime.

For from that start twixt head and heart a small girl bathed in milk
Would grow to be the saint of three great arts –
She would exalt distiller’s malt, weavers craft, poet’s ilk –
All treasures from the soul’s liminal parts.

Our faith is clear in times most drear, when earth is bleak and frigid –
The gods did send a guide, a friend, to all in lovely Brigid.

pomes of buddy don: repeatin a nuthern

i wuz readin eric altermans blog n notissd a innerestin conversayshun a'goin on bout bedrock christchun bleefs, witch ifn ye go here n scroll down to the letters startin with thatn frum roger of marlton, nj, ye kin read whut folks has to say. i half to add mitt, i always thought christ wuz havin us battle fer our souls, not fer how the gummint orta be allowd to enforce sum relijuns bleefs.

innywho, heres the pome, witch i writ it after pat robertson recommended takin out hugo chavez, tho it seems we are still usin christ to justify doin sum verr unchristlike thangs:

It's Always Seemed to Me a Little Odd

It's always seemed to me a little odd
That in his time on earth as Jesus, God
Would fail to make a parable or mention
That being gay defies nature's convention!

Or why in all the truths He did convey
No word against abortion did He say?
Why didn't He explain where life begins
Instead of pardoning evil-doers' sins?

Or how could He ignore the bankers' need
To charge percents of interest that exceed
The fed's prime rate by multiples of eight
And help our rich folks' wealth accumulate?

Instead He advised all to be so meek
That, if attacked, we turn the other cheek
Did He not know the interests of our nation
Might demand covert assassination?

[update: to brake its lank to pat robertsons remarks, here is a lil re rite of the same pome with only the last line changed]

pomes of buddy don: Something Complex

Something Complex

We've all heard the claim once made by the Greeks
That anything moving must have been forced
From earth's deepest seas to her highest peaks
The moved from mover cannot be divorced

And something complex must have a maker
A watch, for example, can't just appear
And each loaf of bread must have a baker
Each levee built needs its own engineer

Some think this proves their god must be real
That nature's great mysteries have to reveal
The rightness of all their faith makes them feel
It's known as the argument from design
We know it will work if you just define
A complex designer that needs no design

pomes of buddy don: For Money to Work

For Money to Work

For money to work its amount must be
Maintained at a rather constant supply.
For if you expand the whole quantity
Each dollar's worth starts to wither and die.

That means just one billionaire to create
Requires one million others decrease
The net worth potential of their estates
By one thousand U.S. dollars apiece.

Rich folks have castles protected by moats,
Communities that their great walls surround.
And though rising tides can lift all the boats
If you have no boat, you'll prob'ly be drowned.

Why do tears fill Jesus' eyes to the brim?
What's done to our poor is done unto Him.
